Samuel Plante, born in Quebec City, knew he wanted to direct films from a very young age. In elementary and high school, he attended all film related classes and camps. Later on, Sam moved to Toronto to study filmmaking in Ryerson University's Film Studies program.
In 2010, Sam directed the short documentary Le Surveillant which was awarded the Jack Kuper Film Award for the storytelling techniques used in the film. Le Surveillant was featured at the Ryerson Art Gallery in the exhibition ''A Pattern of Stories'' and was also one of the projects chosen to represent the Film Studies program in the Prospective Students Guide. The following year, Sam directed the short documentary Cocktail, Receipt, Cancel and the short film Hierarchy. He was awarded the Elvino Sauro Film Award by the faculty for his work.
In the winter of 2012, production started on Samuel's thesis project, Flammable, his most ambitious film yet. With the help of a Kodak Motion Picture Grant, the project was shot on 35mm film. The film opened at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in downtown Toronto as part of the Ryerson University Film Festival. It went on to screen at a number of international film festivals including the Montreal Student Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival and Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival where it found distribution with Toronto's Ouat Media.
In recent years, Sam co-directed the BravoFACT short Acapulco and the bilingual short L'Armoire/The Dresser for ACTRA Toronto's Young Emerging Actors Assembly. He is currently completing post-production on the companion pieces Death & Grieving Men and God & Doubting Women.
Sam also freelances in the film industry in different roles on projects such as music videos, commercials, short films, TV shows, web series and feature films, while working towards his very first and everlasting ambition, directing films. He is currently developing and writing his first feature film.
